The combined programs of the Black Student Fund are unique to the nation. Our strong
student and family support, essential services, financial aid and child advocacy are
coupled with programs that improve cross-racial relations in the schools and community.
The net effect yields improved racial relations in the larger community and in the number
of highly skilled, young black adults, once of modest family income, now in professional
fields in which they can prosper and give back to the public.

Recruitment and Referral. This program focuses on the recruitment and referral of
black children to the independent Participating
Schools and in assisting families with the often complex application process. Our
professional staff responds to an average of 400 telephone calls per week. Students are
referred to the most appropriate BSF Participating
School, or are offered other educational recommendations.
School Fair. The Black Student Fund holds its
Annual School Fair to provide easy access to information on independent schools and the
opportunity for families to talk with school admissions and financial aid directors. The
Fair takes place each year at the Washington Convention Center and in recent years has
attracted more than 5,000 people. Admission to the School Fair is free, and it is open to
the public.
College Planning. BSF grant recipients understand that entering college is their
goal. As they approach their senior year and graduation, they receive counseling in
financial aid planning, college admission requirements, interviewing skills, testing and
application guidance. A free BSF College
Financial Aid Workshop, open to the general public, is held annually.
Teacher Recruitment. The BSF provides consultation and advise to schools seeking to increase
the on-staff presence of black educators, counselors and administrators.

Financial Assistance. The Black Student
Fund awards tuition grants, in conjunction with our Participating
Schools, to African-American children of modest financial means.
Essential Services. A keystone to the success of BSF
students is our Essential Support Services program which enables children to focus on
their education. This program includes crisis intervention and counseling services, as
well as academic support. These essential services are administered without public
visibility or the disclosure of the recipients.

Institute for Equity, Race & Education.
The Institute was established in 1993 to help the Participating
Schools of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia understand and meet the
needs of their black students. The Institute is a teaching facility that offers courses in
cross-racial communication for education professionals and administrators.
