Study Measures AI Readiness in DMV Schools

The Washington, DC Private School AI Curriculum Index 2026, a collaborative study by 5W AI Communications and Haute Living, evaluated 30 DMV independent schools in the capital region to determine whether they are genuinely teaching artificial intelligence or simply relying on outdated STEM frameworks. The index measures schools across five weighted dimensions: curriculum depth, specificity, integration, recency, and institutional partnerships. Only two schools earned top-tier status. The article suggests that families looking for the right school for their child must determine what they want their child to understand about AI and what AI skills they need to learn during their K–12 years.
Only two schools earned top-tier honors by embedding AI across the curriculum into their educational models, offering dedicated AI classes, and introducing advanced ethics programs covering algorithmic bias and surveillance.
The majority of schools placed in the second tier, indicating solid computer science infrastructure but lacking explicit, institutionalized AI curricula. Regionally, Maryland suburbs outperformed Virginia on average, anchored by a dense cluster of high-scoring Tier B schools like Bullis, which is moving rapidly due to aggressive recent technology investments.
Twelve schools placed in the third tier, reflecting a severe lack of AI depth. These schools often maintain basic coding classes or robotics clubs but completely lack named AI course sequences, specialized faculty hires, or institutional research partnerships. Strikingly, across all schools evaluated, none currently teach Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), a trend mirroring findings in higher education.
The study concludes that the primary barrier separating high-performing schools from the rest is institutional intentionality rather than budget constraints. To adapt to the post-ChatGPT reality, the study suggests that schools must proactively rename general technology learning to explicitly address artificial intelligence and lean into AI.
AI is now a school-choice issue. This study alerts parents to the gap between schools in AI adoption, the need to demand AI-specific learning, and the importance of parental vigilance and inquiry about their child’s use of AI.
