Most families come to the Black Student Fund with the same question: where do I even start?

The honest answer is that the search begins earlier than the applications do, and it begins with a smaller number of decisions than it first appears. Here is the shape of the process, and where the posts below fit into it.

Know which grades schools actually admit

Independent schools don't take new students evenly across all grades. Most DMV schools have three main entry points: kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade. Several BSF member schools open seats earlier or on a different rhythm — Holton-Arms begins in third grade, Landon and St. Albans in fourth, and Edmund Burke, Parkmont, The Field School, and The Nora School all begin in sixth. Matching your child's grade to a school's entry point narrows a long list quickly, and it's the fastest way to avoid spending months on a school that has no room.

Decide what you're actually optimizing for

Research on how families choose schools consistently puts two factors above the rest: safety and academic performance. Location, teacher quality, extracurriculars, diversity, and transportation follow. Naming your own top two before you tour anything makes every visit more useful, because you'll be comparing schools on the same terms rather than reacting to whichever campus you saw most recently.

Ask the practical questions early

Tuition is the question many families ask first, but it's rarely the one that decides things. Transportation is often important, especially when considering smaller children. Many BSF member schools run regional bus networks or Metro shuttles, and knowing which ones serve your neighborhood can reopen options you'd written off as too far. Curriculum is worth asking about too, since a number of DMV independent schools have moved away from AP courses in favor of their own advanced programs.

Use the people who've done this before

Don't do this analysis alone. Reading and self study is a good start and gets you part of the way. Talking to families and admissions staff gets you much furhter.
