School Choice in the DMV

June 4, 2025

The DMV K-12 community is a 'school choice' community with parents selecting schools for their children based on family values. Less than 50% of students in the DMV attend their neighborhood or zoned school. The DMV offers a diversity of schools  including: public schools, magnet schools, charter schools, independent schools, schools connected to faith institutions, boarding schools, home school collectives and micro-schools.  Intra-district agreements allow limited numbers of students living in one state to attend a public school in another state. Efforts like Maryland Boost's and the DC Opportunity Scholarship's provide public source funding for families to attend select K-12 independent schools in addition to the over 100 million dollars in financial aid offered by DMV K-12 dependent schools. To help families select the best school for their family, the K-12 DMV's school community offers a variety of recruitment efforts and tools to assist families. For families seeking access to independent education, the Black Student Fund & Latino Student Annual Fund School Fair, which is held annually in October is a must.
